WOOD FLOORING TRENDS

Antique Impressions Castillo Plank Collection, Aragon, Hickory

From Antique Impressions' Castillo Plank Collection:  Aragon

Handmade and  hand textured hickory

Trends in floor coverings over the past 100 years have swung from wood to wall-to -wall carpets and back to wood.  We have not been around for 100 years, but like many of you, we can remember the days when narrow oak boards became "old fashioned".  In the mid-20th century, we were covering up those oak floors with wall-to-wall carpets while many a "Persian area rug" was tossed.  Today, wood floors are "in".  The options are mind boggling.  Oak remains a favorite choice right along side hickory, walnut, exotic woods and reclaimed  floor and barn wood.  Current tastes favor wide planks as opposed to the narrow 2 "inch-ish" boards of yesteryear. The range of color choices, grain, and finish have grown substantially.  Light beige tones worked to a high shine are being replaced by light gray and dark brown tones with a bit less shine.  On the Monterey Peninsula we see that trend but tastes here also run to rich walnut colors.

We have expanded our wood collection to include a larger array of manufacturers and have developed our own Carpets & Floors, Inc. Line of wood.   Please stop by to see what is new.

6 QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE YOU MAKE YOUR FLOORING SELECTION

(Don't forget to ask us these questions.)

1.  What is the difference between hardwood and engineered wood?

2.  Why choose engineered over hardwood?

3.  Other than how it looks, is there some reason to choose one finish over another?

4.  Is it really okay to put wood in a kitchen or bathroom?  What are the downsides?

5.  Is my sub-surface appropriate for wood installation?  How much prep will it need?

6.  What kind of experience have the store installers had with laying wood?
